Preparing for Universities in Thailand

For admission to Thai Programs: (Thai Language curriculum) Students must have passed the (new) Thai Government Admissions Process. The percentage will be divided up into:
• 70% for the government admissions test
• O-NET (Ordinary National Education Test)
• A-NET (Advance National Education Test)
• 10% for the cumulative GPA in High School
• 20% for support courses taken in High School

For admission to International Programs: (English Language curriculum) The following test scores are used as part of the application to most colleges:

1. International Standardized Test Scores (e.g. TOEFL, IELTS, SAT) and/or
2. Local Test Scores

  • a. TU-GET for Thammsat University
  • b. CU-TEP for Chulalongkorn University

SAT and TOEFL now has a new test and score range: SAT full score is 2400 (Math 800, Critical Reading 800, Writing 800); TOEFL (internet-based) full score is 120. Colleges will be announcing the new requirements when the new admission policies have been established. For the most current and complete information, students should contact the Thai College counselor. The information below are a general guide as to what the requirements are for the moment.

TOEFL score:213 (computer-based test) or 80 (internet-based test) and IELTS score: at least 6.0

  • SAT score: at least 1100 (combination of Math + Critical Reading)
  • Cum GPA: to be safe 2.5 (e.g. Thammasat-BAS) / 3.0 (e.g. Chula)
  • Courses to support (pre-requisites)
  • Two Teacher Recommendations

* If students do not meet these scores, admission may be granted on the basis of entrance exams in their chosen subjects.

Note: Some colleges do not specify the required GPA, but they will look at the combination of all requirements, for example:

  1. Courses to support
  2. SAT / TOEFL / IELTS
  3. Recommendation letter
  4. Interview

Undergraduate Program

The undergraduate degree aims to convey knowledge and vocational skills to improve their ability to apply theory to practices in the academic and later in the professional area. To circulate the knowledge they participate in the national development in specific area like economy, political science, cultural and environmental aspects. The undergraduate degrees are offered in arts, science, engineering, technology and medicine.

Tuition Fee: 

  • Government university tuition fee is around 300,000 Baht – 400,000 Baht ($10,000 – $14,000) per academic year
  • Private university tuition fee is around 400,000 Baht – 500,000 Baht ($13,500 – $16,500) per academic year

Graduate Program

Master Degrees are offered in at least 30 universities, which are recognized as top universities all over Thailand. These courses aim to specialize in a very narrow field of study with good depth of knowledge. The courses are either based on course work or research studies or a blend of both of them. The duration of the degrees are often not more than 2 years except for few (some universities allow 6 years for some certain programs).

Tuition Fee:

  • Government university tuition fee starts from 250,000 Baht ($8,300) per academic year
  • Private university tuition fee starts from 400,000 Baht ($13,500) per academic year
  • For double-degree, the tuition fee starts from 1,000,000 Baht ($33,333) per academic year

PhD Program

Doctoral studies are offered by the premier institutions of the country which requires excellent academics in both bachelors and masters along with very good orientation towards research and development. The duration is a minimum of 3 years and lasts till the completion of the final thesis.

Tuition Fee: starts from 1,000,000 Baht ($33,333) per academic year

Grading at the university level is based on a credit points system. Each subject is graded individually and the points are tabulated. Many English programmes and some individual teachers still use the A, B, C, D and F gading system with F being the failing grade.
